May 9th Mick Shadwick - Person Behind The Badge
Mick had previously passed around a small black plaque/plate for members to guess what it was. Mick was born in Yarrawonga and went to school at Sacred Heart until Yr 10 (then Intermediate) then he went to Assumption, Kilmore for 2 years. He remembers life in Yarrawonga as having limited opportunities and also recalled many nicknames of those he went to school with. Also Sr. Gertrude who gave “the cuts” but not as bad as the cane at Kilmore. Mick and Pres John went out with 2 Clarke sisters. He studied Commerce at Melbourne Uni. Then worked in Canberra & Treasury for over 30 years – no reason to leave. It was a dedicated & professional workplace and not at all like the general view of Public Service. While working in Finance, Mick went to East Timor and also did a Masters Degree. He retired twice (a slow learner!) but kept returning to Yarrawonga and now lives at Burramine. He has joined CFA, Friends of the Library, Cemetery Trust as well as continuing with Rotary after becoming a member at Hall, ACT. Mick collects atlases(1,000), maps(200) and globes(60) and continues doing some teaching and consulting. He has 4 Children and 9 Grandchildren and loves being nearer to them. He asked for ideas about the plate and revealed it was a Diplomatic Bicycle Licence Plate for Beijing.
