October 19 - District Governor Richard Luke
DG Richard firstly apologized to members for changing the “Chinese Night” and thanked AG Malcolm for attending and listening to his talk for the 5th time. He outlined his background and the spoke of 5 goals for the year for all Clubs 1. Polio. Continue with giving so that the eradication might continue. 2. Membership – particularly to retain new members with mentoring and support. 3. Foundation. Continued support for Foundation.
He then introduced Lorna who spoke about her project for the year – Polio Eradication. To Oct 14th, there have been just 51 new cases for the year – 38 in Pakistan & 13 in Afghanistan. She told the story of how RI President Ravi has a close tie – his mother contracted polio and only for Rotary intervention to get a ventilator, she would not have survived.
4. Richard’s fourth goal is Mental health – ARHF Scholarships & research into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder especially in our essential services and Military. 5. Clubs. Support and maintain Clubs in all their endeavours.
Richard also reminded members that we need to encourage the government to restore the grant for Polio. Letters, written by Ian Riseley are available on the web to copy and send.
President John Thanked Richard for his talk and presented Lorna with a cheque for $200 for Polio Plus (in addition to our usual annual donation) and also presented them and Malcolm with Club wine glasses.
